Duke Dog Statues

As part of James Madison’s Centennial Celebration, 2-foot-tall versions of the Duke Dog statue will be displayed in a number of locations around campus and in stores and restaurants in downtown Harrisonburg. The statues are being created by Lee Leuning, the designer of the James Madison statue on campus, as well as the original Duke Dog that guards the entrance to the football stadium. For $1,500, an individual or organization can purchase a statue and the assistance of a professional artist to decorate it. JMU students will receive a discount, and they can purchase a statue for $1,100.

This idea has been around for a number of years, and I’ve seen painted horses in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and decorated crabs in Baltimore, Maryland. I think that this is a great idea for JMU because it will bring positive attention to JMU’s Centennial and strengthen the relationship between the University and the Harrisonburg community. Personally, I can’t wait to see the various designs that don the statues.
