Mary Washington Fires President

The University of Mary Washington fired its president, William J. Frawley, Monday after he was charged in two separate incidents with driving under the influence. Frawley flipped his car in Fairfax April 10, and was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital. The next morning Frawley left the hospital against medical advice, and a warrant was issued charging him with driving under the influence. On April 11, Frawley was arrested in Fredericksburg after a witness reported seeing him driving in a car missing the right front tire. Frawley was followed by local police, but he didn’t stop the car until he reached his home, where he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and refusal to take a Breathalyzer test. Frawley faces court appearances in May and July.

The University of Mary Washington is located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and it has about 5,000 students and 1,000 employees. Frawley was named the school’s seventh president in July. He came to Mary Washington from George Washington University, where he was dean of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. He also worked for 23 years at the University of Delaware. Frawley had an annual salary of $305,000, lived in a university-owned home and drove a vehicle provided by the school’s foundation. Richard V. Hurley, the university’s vice president for administration, is the acting president.
