Richmond Braves Moving to Georgia?

I just read an article in The Hook saying that the Richmond Braves, the Atlanta Brave’s AAA team, will be moving to Gwinnett County, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb.

The team is moving because stadium talks between Braves officials and the City of Richmond have stalled. According to Lindsay Barnes the” city government had proposed several sites for a stadium to replace The Diamond, the 8,000-seat stadium located on the North Boulevard just off I-95.” However, the two entities could not reach a consensus on any of the sites.

The team’s move is part of recent trend in the minor leagues — teams are moving closer to their major league teams. “Just last year, the Philadelphia Phillies moved their AAA squad from Ottawa, Canada and its 14-year-old stadium to Allentown, PA.”

Sources say that the AAA Braves team could begin playing in its new home as early as the 2009 season.

Will Richmond Braves’ move open the door for another minor league baseball team in Central Virginia?
